Styling Tip No.1: Visit the Museum

To consume art is one of the most efficient ways of training the eye for Fashion Styling.

It is easy to fall in the temptation that leads us to think there is no connection between going to a museum and being a better fashion stylist. However, seeing paintings, sculptures, photography, and decorative arts, can be useful when combining colors, establishing references for an editorial work or interpreting a collection, since there are designers who take art as a source of inspiration.

Paintings are the first source of information when it comes to fashion history, that is, because for a long time, they were the only medium available for documenting people’s dress in determined epochs. They also work as composition references when working the creative direction area, whether it is advertising content or editorial.

Some galleries and museums include fashion in their collections, while some institutions have areas completely focused on the study and conservation of clothing like the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Fashion Institute of Technology or The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York, responsible for the famous Met Gala.

While at the museum, make photographs and take notes on the specific details of the artworks that grab your attention. Analyze the garments you see and how you can reinterpret them with the materials you’ve got at hand. That way, you'll be able to amplify your creative field and offer complete alternatives to your clients that show knowledge in other areas. This will impregnate your work with prestige.
